Note – the forum is only ‘shrunk’ if you go directly through the menu link, through the sidebar widgets, and once you click a topic/etc it’s fine

If I understand you correctly, you should use the style pack plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/bbp-style-pack/ and look at both the forum template and forum display tabs in the settings
